Ripped up old carpet on stairs to basement, better to use linoleum or carpent again to cover stairs?

I have two small children so my mother and husband think it would be safer to have the carpet. I think it would look nice and easier to clean to have the linoleum covering, and I don't think carpet is that much safer. Does anyone else have a preference? If so why?

Answers:

1i would say that if the basement is a full basement and used for entertaining/living then i would go w/ carpet. but if it's only used for parking/storage/laundry i'd go w/ the linoleum b/c it's cleaner, healthier and doesn't get as worn down as carpet. plus it's easier to sweep than vacuum carpet on stairs.
