Need to install skirtboard on stairs -walls on both sides - stairs done no carpet yet. Best way to cut/install

We are finishing our basement, the builder put the stairs in, they are currently butted up the the sheet rock, I need to cut/install the skirtboard. We will be carpeting after the skirtboard and other trim are installed. Right now each step has a slight overhang. Someone suggest to me that I cut about one inch of the overhang out on each step (next to each wall) to allow room for the skirtboard (rather than cutting the skirtboard to accomodate the over hang - is that a good idea?).

Answers:

1Yes, and the easiest solution too.

If you think it might help and the treads are screwed down, take them up, install your skirtboard, trim the edge of the tread, and reinstall. The skirt usually gets installed alongside the stringers, but if they're already in, then you can go ahead and follow the suggestion.
