easy way to remove ice from wooden outdoor steps

I have a 13 year old doberman, and she has a lot of trouble getting down our back deck steps when they are icy. she usually falls halfway down them, is there anything i can apply to them to keep this from happening.??? Is there anything other than applying mats to them????
