What is a stair stringer and how can I answer the question that are detailed below?

This is the question the contractor is asking us.
These stairs receive carpet.
This being the case, we are going to need specific direction as to how to handle the edges since the Stairs are shown as being an “open” design, if you will.

We will also need to know what material(s) are preferred for the sides of the Stringers and how they will transition into or butt against the edge of the carpeted treads and risers as well as how the Stringer sides will transition with the bottom of the Stairs, which is to receive Drywall.
