What is the mathematical formula for picket placement?

When placing pickets between newel posts, how do you calculate for equal spacing between newel posts? I have forgotten the mathematical formula!

take the thickness of 1 picket and add 4". then take your distance between the newel posts and divide by this number. round up your result. this will give you the number of pickets you need. multiply the number of pickets needed by the thickness of 1 picket. this will give you the total space the pickets will occupy. subtract this number from the space between the newel posts. this will give you your free space. add one to the number of pickets and divide this into your free space. this will give you your equal spacing. or if you have an iphone, there is an app called balusterpro which will do these calcs in seconds.
