i am looking for a product to apply to wooden staircase to prevent slipping



i am moving into an older, historical type home...rental...and it has an open wooden staircase and the steps have nothing on them to prevent sliding or slipping. the wood is beautiful. what can i use to preserve the wood, but keep it safe when using?
