what is a "box" style stair

i have front and back exterior stairways to my 3 story house. My contract with my builder says "box" style stairs with full risers. The stairs have no backs on them and look aweful. (plus I am afraid my poodle will go flying thru on his way up). Should they have backs on them as I expected them to?
