Are they brass?

I have 12 stair rods which are at least 50 years old and they seem to be brass but I'm wondering if they're just another metal with a brass case. They're circular, diameter 1 cm., length 66 cms. and each weighs 342 gms. Are they brass or how can I tell? Thanks
